A Shiny New Ride into the Cloud

Have you ever been in the market for a new car and the first thing you thought to yourself was “Man I sure would look good in that 1998 Chevy Malibu!” Of course not! We all start by searching for the latest and greatest sports car in bright red that does 0 to 60 in 3 seconds or the monster SUV that could tow a yacht. So when EarthLink was looking for new infrastructure in 2012 to build our next generation cloud platform, we surveyed the hardware provider landscape to try to find out who was selling the shiny sports car that could tow a ton, had amazing gas mileage, a convertible top, a monster sound system, and was the next big thing in the market.

Surprisingly, we didn’t have to look far, as it turned out our long-time and trusted partner Cisco was making waves in the infrastructure world with their UCS platform. UCS (“Unified Computing System”) was a totally new take on the data center infrastructure model, providing a combination of servers integrated with network elements to provide a platform on which we could build our services. EarthLink specifically ended up selecting a FlexPod architecture which combined Cisco’s UCS compute and network infrastructure with NetApp’s storage and VMware’s Virtualization software to offer an integrated and certified solution on which we could deploy or next generation Cloud services.

Working with a trusted partner who is known throughout the IT industry gave EarthLink’s platform immediate credibility as being building on a solid foundation that could scale and offer consistent, reliable performance to our customers.  We got the sports car performance that we wanted, the low maintenance and superior handling of a precisely engineered luxury car, the reliability and dependability of a solid workhorse truck, and the capacity of the biggest SUV you could imagine.  We deployed this solution into five data centers throughout the US to give EarthLink regional diversity and we couldn’t be happier with how smoothly the deployment process went and how easy it has been to manage the platforms.  We have the tools we need to care for and manage the platforms, monitor their health, and perform routine maintenance with a level of ease we never had before.

Please give us a call, and we’d be happy to take you out for a spin in our shiny new ride (start by getting an EarthLink Cloud Assessment!).  We’re pretty confident you won’t be disappointed in the trip we can take you on.
